Combining gold paint, twisting threads and intricate detailing, Gustav Klimt’s Water Serpents I is typical of the artists ‘golden phase’. It is only the allegorical title of the work, which presents two naked lesbians embracing each other, that made the painting acceptable for Klimt’s contemporaries.
